STERLING BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTS NEW SUPERINTENDENT

Sterling, CT: At a special meeting on June 20, 2022, the Sterling Board of Education unanimously appointed Mr. Theodore F. Friend its next Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2022. Mr. Friend is retiring as Superintendent of Schools in Sutton, MA, a role he has held for the past 12 years.

Mr. Friend began his career teaching for ten years at the elementary level in the Worcester Public Schools. He then spent three years as Principal of Holland Elementary School. From there, Ted moved to Fiskdale, MA, where he spent three years as Principal of Tantasqua Regional Junior High School, two as Associate Principal and then one as Acting Principal at Tantasqua Regional High School. Simultaneously, Ted served his last two years there as the Associate Superintendent before moving to Sutton in 2010. He has also been an adjunct professor at Worcester State University for the past five years.

Sterling Board Chair Michael Rouillard said, “The Search Committee has taken the search for Sterling’s new superintendent very seriously. We listened carefully to our stakeholders who participated in focus groups and a survey. Our analysis of candidates was guided by the resulting Leadership Profile. We spread the net wide in our search for candidates and even re-posted the position to expand the pool. Mr. Friend impressed the committee with his experience, his passion for teaching and learning, and his understanding of the role of supporting the principal and teachers and staff in honing their craft.”

Mr. Friend wrote, “Schools must create a loving, caring environment for both students and staff. Every child should know that they are loved and cherished each and every day. With that school culture, every child builds confidence, academic achievement grows, and the community benefits as well. I look forward to working with Sterling’s staff to create a fun, positive, academically challenging school culture.”

Mr. Friend earned his Bachelor’s degree from Worcester State University, his Master’s from Cambridge College in Boston, and his Education Specialist certificate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

The Sterling Board was guided in its search by Dr. Mary Broderick of CABE Search Services.
